Volvo ICM repair it yourself and save money

Volvo ICM
Issues and Solutions
The ICM-Unit is, amongst other things, controlling the display in the center console and as it goes dark, some features in the vehicle becomes challenging or impossible to control. Other features will stop functioning entirely.
Issues with the Distance Alarm System have been listed, even though i cannot say for a fact that this has anything to do with the ICM problem.
Some Volvo owners have claimed that issues with the Distance Warning System have preceded the display- and radio- problems.
On the vehicle we use in this example, the warnings didn't work properly when the owner purchased it and after the ICM display-dark / radio-cutout problem was solved, the Distance Warning System started working as it should.
The sound signals from system comes out of the radio speakers, which naturally silences the Warning sounds if the radio doesn't work, but on this particular vehicle the radio was working.

Symptoms mentioned connected to ICM-Unit failure:

  • Radio not working
  • Radio not working cold ( starts working after a while )
  • Radio cuts out intermittent
  • ICM display dark
  • ICM display lights up after a while
  • Distance Alarm when in Reverse not working or wrong warnings ( see text )

Workshop repair

At the workshop this fault is fixed by replacing the ICM-unit, which is expensive. Repair cost for the ICM-unit in Scandinavia is approx. 800€ + labor.
The module CAN be exchanged to a "second hand" unit, but needs to be programmed to fit your car at a Volvo dealer or workshop.
And there is NO guaranties that this will work better than the original one.
Some workshops offer a ICM-Unit repair solution, where the Unit is sent off for repair. This option is approx. 400€ cheaper, but the final cost will still end up in the area of 800 - 1000 €.

DIY ICM-Unit repair

In many cases, if not most, the issue is bad / loose solder joints on the ICM circuit board.
Re-soldering the ICM-Unit solves the problems in most cases, and with only a little skill in soldering the ICM-Unit can be repaired as a DIY-job.
The module is located behind the display in the center console, and getting access to the Unit is the biggest problem if you haven't done it before.
Stripping down the center console for access, isn't a big or demanding job if you know how it's done.
Otherwise it's easy to waste time or break something.
