Citroën C5
Gauge(s) not working

The Citroën C5 has, like some other makes and models, an instrument cluster where the gauge needles are mounted directly onto the stepper motor shaft. Depending of make and model, the amount of gauges that have stepper motor varies.
To repair or replace the stepper motor, the instrument cluster needs to be removed.

Removal

The removal of the instrument cluster is different on all makes and models. Refer to make and model specific instructions before attempting to remove the cluster.
On this model a 2001 C5 the cluster is held in place by two screws on the upper side "shade" and two "hooks" on the lower side. The "hooks" can be released by two plastic cards ( CC-type ) pushed in between the lower edge of the cluster and the dashboard.
When the cluster is loose it can be carefully pried out starting on the upper side. Take notes of all cable connectors position as they are disconnected.

Removing the Stepper Motor
BEFORE removing the motor notice the setting of the gauge "needles", they are mounted directly on top of the stepper motor and will have to come off. Reinstalling them in the wrong position will result in wrong readings.. for example: Speedometer is 10 ticks off.. If possible, take a picture of the cluster gauges before releasing the motors. The stepper motor housing can vary a bit, and that way also the mounting to the cluster is different. Most are hold in place by a couple of "clips" and the pins connecting the motor to the cluster.
This is a very common stepper motor and is used in Jaeger and Magneti Marelli clusters.
Some makes and models are listed further down.

Repairing the stepper motor.
The stepper motor only consists of a few parts and is easy to disassemble. In most cases the problem is that the shaft of the smaller gear ( green ) is broken. The shaft is a part of the housing and isn't supported at the other end, which is the reason why it breaks.
Measure the shaft diameter and drill a hole in the housing where the shaft has broken off. Use a new shaft, a little bit longer, so that it is long enough to pass through the hole in the housing and still go all the way through the gear. Leaving a mm or so on the outside of the housing makes it possible to support the shaft.

Glue the shaft to the hole and build up a support on the outside using a high quality glue. Let the glue harden and assemble the stepper motor.
Remember to check the "needle" positions when mounting them back on the motor, to avoid wrong readings.
On some occasions i have noticed that the motor works with a little "cough" at first, but after a while this has smoothed out and disappeared.
