Volvo V70 2.4D 2008 Coolant leak

Volvo V70 Coolant leak
2008, D5

In an engine compartment like the V70 diesel even finding a leaking hose can be a challenge, since there are several hoses that are hard, if not impossible to see without removing covers and parts.
The engine under-cover can divert the leaking coolant, and make locating the leak difficult.

On this vehicle the main puddle location was at the back of the engine, approximately below the flywheel or gearbox front part.
From the top side no leaking hose could be seen, but on closer inspection coolant could be seen dripping on to and running down the side of the gearbox.
That indicates to the hoses connected to the EGR-cooler, but the hoses cannot be seen without clearing a path.
After removing parts preventing access and obstructing the view, the leaking hose was found to be a short 16mm hose ( a 90 dgr bend ) connecting the EGR-cooler to the top cover.

What needs to be removed?

To be able to see and get access to the hose, a few parts needs to be removed.
Whether or not all of them need removing is dependent of the type of cooler, but on this vehicle best access is obtained by removing:
  • Battery, and the box it is in
  • Air Filter assembly, upper and lower part
  • Loosing the clamps holding the cable harness running across the gearbox

After removing these parts there is just enough space to change the hose and securing the new clamps.
